The purpose of this website is to provide foreign visitors with preliminary knowledge of Arita before visiting the town, including tourist attractions and the charms of Arita-yaki porcelain. We would also be happy if you could use it as a guide after your visit to Arita Town.

Arita has a profound charm that cannot be conveyed at first glance. Therefore, we will operate this website so that it will serve as a bridge between Arita Town and visitors to the town through the stories behind the town and the sights that lie in this region. The website is managed by the English Study Group, a volunteer group of members who love Arita Town. Please feel free to use the site.

Arita Town transformed a mountain into porcelains.

Many people around the world do not know. They do not know that a small, quiet mountain town called Arita in Saga Prefecture, on the western edge of Japan, was the first to produce porcelain in Japan. About 400 years ago, in the quarry-like area in the image to the right, a mountain rose up.

Arita-yaki celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2016. As part of this project, this video “ARITA EPISODE 1 (1616-)” was produced. This promotional video was created by TeamLab with the cooperation of Saga Prefecture.

Arita Town is the birthplace of porcelain in Japan

Arita Town in Saga Prefecture is known as the birthplace of Japanese porcelain and is famous for Arita ware, which boasts a history of over 400 years. The beautiful white porcelain and blue-and-white ceramics are fired, preserving the traditional craftsmanship that thrives to this day.

Many kilns, including the Kakiemon kiln and Imaemon kiln, who continues to uphold their legacy, safeguards the techniques of Living National Treasures. Surrounded by nature, the town’s rich history and scenery with it’s climbing kilns, chimneys, and Tonbai walls aptivates visitors. It is a place where one can fully appreciate the artistic charm of Arita ware.
